Driver Feature: Interview with Denis Lian

In this special edition of Driver Feature, we interview our very own homegrown former professional race driver, Denis Lian.

SK: How did you begin your racing career? 你是如何开始你的赛车生涯的?

DL:When I was 9yrs old, I visited a family Friend in the US, who happen to live next to a fun kart facility. I was always attracted to Motorsports even at that young age. I therefore wanted to drive a kart very badly, but when I went to the facility, the crew said I was too short to safely reach the pedals so I wasn’t allowed to drive. I wasn’t put off by their decision, not one bit. In fact, I was already devising an idea to get myself in the Drivers seat. The moment I got back to my room, I immediately began stuffing tissue paper into my shoes to make myself taller so that I could meet the minimum height requirements to drive the kart. So the next day, I showed my mum n her Friend my plan, and convinced them to take me down to the kart track, which thankfully they did, and I passed the height requirement and that became my first ever Motorsports experience. SK: How do you feel about the motorsports scene in Singapore right now? 你对新加坡的赛车运动有何感想?

DL:I think the Motorsports landscape has changed quite substantially over the years. It was definitely a lot more vibrant for local participants back in the day with ‘Carpark Rallies’, Sprints and Gymkhana events held on a regular basis, there was a thriving industry that helped launch quite a number of local talents into household names. Unfortunately all that has vanished for various reason. Yes, Singapore now host F1, but that has done little to actually promote the real Motorsports culture at home, if anything, it’s done Motorsports a disservice as most people think that F1 is the only form of Motorsports. On a positive note, the rise in quality Karting facilities with a vibrant field of participants gives me some hope that our Motorsports culture, while not as diverse as before, will still survive on our little sunny island. 我认为多年来赛车运动的情况发生了很大变化。对于星加坡的参加者来说,以前参加“Carpark Rally”,Sprints和Gymkhana的定期举办的活动,當時有一个蓬勃发展的行业,帮助不少本地人才成为家喻户晓的人物。不幸的是,因为各种原因这已经消失了。是的,新加坡现在主办F1,但这对于真正在国内推广真正的赛车文化没有多大作用,如果有的话,它已经完成了赛车运动,因为大多数人认为F1是唯一的赛车运动形式。从积极的方面来看,拥有充满活力的参与者的卡丁车设备质量的提升给了我一些希望,即我们的赛车运动文化虽然不像以前那么多样化,但仍然会在我们的小阳光岛上生存下来。

SK: Which Asia country do you feel is the strongest in motorsports culture right now and why? 你觉得现在哪个亚洲国家是赛车运动文化中最强大的,为什么?

DL:I would have to say Japan followed by China. It’s simple really, they have a thriving domestic automotive industry which is supportive of Motorsports. Japan has a far older Motorsports culture but China has a much larger industry as well as population base, but their Motorsports culture is in its infancy. It will be interesting to see how China develops and perhaps even leads this field in the near future. 我想是日本跟着中国。很简单,他们拥有一个支持赛车运动的蓬勃发展的国内汽车行业。日本的赛车运动文化要远远高于中国,但中国的工业和人口基础都比较大,但是他们的赛车运动文化还处于起步阶段。看看中国在不久的将来如何发展,甚至可能领导这一领域,这将会很有趣。

SK: How do you feel the current batch of local race drivers are compared to those from your generation? 你如何看待当前一批当地的赛车手与你们这一代的比较?

DL:I think each generation produces quality Drivers, but it’s getting more competitive to reach the TOP of any race category as the quality of data and the greater opportunity to test/practise in real life as well as on Simulators have pushed the overall driving standards much higher than before. Local Drivers are getting much more international racing exposure than before, and that invariably pushes the standards up. The local young guns who are making waves at the moment are Andrew Tang, Afiq Ikhwan and Jazeman Jaffar. SK: I understand you are also into flying planes, what do you feel flying and racing have in common? 我知道你也是飞行员,你觉得飞行和赛车有什么共同点?

DL:Focus and discipline, the 2 key things that are required in racing and flying. 专注和纪律,这是赛车和飞行所需要的两件关键事情。

SK: What are your plans for the future? 你未来的计划是什么?

DL:I’ve had a Long and very fortunate racing career, winning races and championships in multiple international series. I’ve a pretty laid back attitude now, I don’t have anymore fixed plans to race in any particular series. If the opportunity comes knocking, and if I feel it suits me, then I might go for it, otherwise I let it go. I’m not hunting down the drives anymore, it comes with age n experience.
