People who love karting usually have a thing for cars as well. So although we are called Singapore Karts, our general aim is to grow grassroots motorsports in Singapore. So when our members do take part in car races, we would like to do our part to highlight their general motorsports activities, especially when it involves racing in the Sepang 1000km Endurance Race, aka, S1K. Here is Tony Chooi’s account of Eunos Racing Team at the Sepang 1000km Endurance Race 2016:
Sepang 1000km Endurance Race 2016 – Car #33 – Proton Satria Neo
It was 1am on 4th September 2016 and we just got back into the hotel room. It’s been a great day as we finally fulfilled our wish of successfully completing a regional level car race.
Its been a long week – We have been at Sepang Circuit since Tuesday (4 days before the race) to go through paid practice, official practice and qualifying sessions. To make the task more difficult, one of our driver (Tony Chooi) was actually nursing a suspected rib fracture(s) that is causing him much pain.
We are also one of the two full Singaporean Team in the paddock (car #33 by Tony Chooi, James Ling and Kenneth Wong and car #37 by Hong Tsui, Gerald Tan and Shawn Peh)
There was so much tension in the last 2 hours of this 1000km, 9 hour long race. Fingers and toes were crossed as everyone silently willed the trusty race car to hold on to the end.
When the car crossed the finish line, everyone in the team, including support crew, friends and fellow drivers, all whooped and cheered, clapped and hugged. A tear secretly fell from the corner of our eyes. The feeling of happiness and accomplishment, it’s just WOW.
Many thanks to Ramlan Moktar of RBM Motorsport and his team of excellent pit crews, and to Keong of KT Auto who prepared the car, and of course to team drivers ourselves Tony Chooi, James Ling and Kenneth Wong. We think we worked very well together, and we trusted each other to do the right things during the race. More importantly, we had fun, ya!
Cheers and looking forward to Sepang 1000
Consider these numbers:
Event: 2016 Sepang 1000 km Endurance Race
Race Length: 1000km (181 laps) or 9hr 15min limit
Lap length: 5.543km
Corners Per Lap: 15
No of Gear Changes Per Lap: 18
For us, we completed 160 laps, 21 laps behind race winner, total time 8hrs 33mins.
Qualified: 24th position
Finished: 13th position
Independent Cup: 8th position
Total Race Distance: 886km
No of Corners Taken: 2400
No of Gear Changes Done: 2880
After dividing all that equally between 3 drivers, each would have:
1) Raced about 300km,
2) Tackled about 800 corners, and
3) Made about 950 gear changes.
Mind boggling numbers!
Fastest Time Qualifying for Team: 2:54.125min (Tony)
Fastest Race Lap for Team: 2:55.258min (Tony)
